Modern Disco Queen Peaches gave the High Desert a smashing performance on Monday, June 8, 2009, at Pappy & Harriets Palace in Pioneertown, Calif. Known for her bisexual antics and perverted lyrics, Peaches was definitely a unique artist to stop by the desert and give a crazed performance that turned heads and sparked a party that the crowd will never forget.

Peaches, a Toronto-based musician who has been performing since ’95, has gradually gained success through the years due to her sexual personality, modern electronic music and disco fashion. Her album covers and photos boast her femininity combined with masculinity, for example, a bearded face, scarce makeup or transvestite clothing. Before her music career kicked off, she was a music and performance teacher for small children because she believed the school system lacked in truly sparking creativity in children. A teacher by day but Peaches by night, Peaches eventually quit her job and moved to Berlin to pursue her musical career. She received accolades in Europe and made her name known worldwide, having even performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2007.

In May of 2009, Peaches released her latest album “I Feel Cream” and is currently ramming through her North American tour. After performing twice in Los Angeles, Peaches surprisingly decided to stop by small Pioneertown to give a unique personal performance to the desert crowd.

Drums of Death-005.jpgKicking off a night of electronic music, Scotland-based musician Drums of Death warmed up the crowd with his solo performance and voodoo-painted face. He jumped down in the audience to yell the words of his music, and would run back up to control the sound equipment on his own. He soon thanked the crowd for their attention and welcomed Peaches to take control of the stage.

The crowd size grew quickly as the Peaches performance neared. As expected, some members wore outfits of leather design, top hats and colorful makeup. Most of the crowd was desert locals ready for a night of fun, and some even came from further distances to see Peaches give a personal performance to a smaller crowd.

Peaches-012.jpgThe stage lights turned off as band members cloaked in metallic outfits walked up on stage and prepared their instruments. Suddenly, the spotlight turned to a far off table where a small person stood with a hooded face, wearing silver moon boots, cream colored tights and a puffy cotton candy top. The crowd raveled at what seemed to be a munchkin who stood before them, but was in fact Peaches!

Peaches-025.jpgMusic began to blare as Peaches grabbed a microphone and quickly ran to the main stage to begin her intro song. She pulled the hood off to reveal bleached hair that was shaved off on both sides of her head, as though she decided to leave her Mohawk down. Both of her cheeks were covered with a large oval of pink, matching her outfit and topping off her retro theme. Her fierce personality became evident as she belched out her sexual lyrics with confidence and even hopped off the stage to dance at different parts of the arena. At one point she even went behind the bar, singing as she drank beer between words. The performance escalated as the crowd knew not what to expect from Peaches, and Pappy & Harriets became a playhouse for this crazed musician.

Eventually she ran back to the stage to begin a new song with rap and funk. This time, she jumped on the crowd who amazingly kept her afloat for long periods of times. She became worried as she almost hit a pole, and even yelled at a person in the audience who was taking pictures of her rather than helping her stay on top of the crowd.

“You don’t want a picture of me falling do you?” she yelled.

Peaches-042.jpgOriginally sung with Iggy Pop, Peaches performed the song “Kick It” where a band member dressed up as Iggy came out on stage to sing parts of the song with her. Peaches later said that she had two cousins in the desert, claiming they were called “It,” and right then two scantily clad women walked out with large wigs covering their faces. The women danced with Peaches as she performed the song “Talk To Me” to an excited crowd who loved the different stage guests.

At one point, Peaches paused between one of her songs, “I have recently become an ordained minister and a funky rabbi. We are going to have a quickie wedding.”

She called up six women from the audience who were all dressed in bridal costume and smiled brightly before the crowd. Peaches had them all give their names to the audience, and they told her that all of them wanted to be married together. Peaches asked if they would all love each other together, and even alone.

“I pronounce you all slutty brides,” Peaches said happily, as the crowd laughed ecstatically.

After changing her outfit several times throughout the performance, she played her most popular songs “F**k the Pain Away” and “The Boys Wanna Be Her.” She never once lost energy and kept the crowd entertained throughout her whole performance and into the night.

Peaches-054.jpgHands down, Peaches gave one of the best performances to ever take place at Pappy & Harriets. Even though she has been performing for more than 10 years, she does not show any sign of slowing down or losing touch with her original beliefs. Musically, lyrically, and appearance wise, it’s obviously that creativity continues and will continue to come naturally to Peaches.
