Disney Pixar (2009)
Story by Allen Lawrence

After seeing the movie “Star Trek” two weeks ago, I figured there were really no other good movies that would be coming out this year. As a Trekkie for many years, I thought that the best had been done and space was clear to return to mundane and short-term diversions. I was wrong.
“Up” is exactly what the title suggests — a movie that will take you up not only to our earthly skies but also to new and higher levels of just enjoying a well-done and great movie. My reason for going to see ”Up,” a Pixar animated movie was upon request of my 9-year-old granddaughter, Sophie who was visiting from Macon Ga. She wanted to see “Up,” and I was going to take her and sit through it no matter how boring, childish, trite and mundane it might be. You must be getting the impression about now that animated movies are not my thing, and you would be right. “Shrek” was okay and there have been a few others I have reasonably enjoyed but in truth “Up” was inspiring and fun.
We saw it at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. Just before “Up” started, there was a musical performance of dancing Donald and Daisy, Mickey and Minnie, and more of the famous Disney characters. I spent most of the time watching my granddaughter laugh, be excited and generally enjoy this performance. It was great to see her enjoying it, and I loved seeing her have fun.
Now, I am not going to tell you the story of “Up” and truth be told, the story was not in itself a terribly special yarn; it was good, but what was better was how it all came together, the 3D, the story, the animation and the message. The message was clear and stimulating, again I won’t tell you what the message was, only that it was worth spending the money and the time to here and see it. My granddaughter enjoyed the movie, and so did I. What more can anyone ask for an afternoon's entertainment?
If you love animation, you will love “Up.” If you have children or grandchildren, you will find taking them to “Up” will be well worth the time and money. If you do not have children, you might want to adopt some so you can have a real reason to see this movie. In short go see it; you will enjoy it, I did.
Director Pete Docter and co-director and writer Bob Peterson, as well as Pixar, did a wonderful job. Ed Asner as the voice of the main character, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen, was fantastic. Christopher Plummer, Jordan Nagai and Elie Docter as well as all of the other voices and animators did a great job. See “Up.” You won't be sorry.
