Palm Springs, Calif., celebrated Independence Day in true American fashion. Not only were there the traditional fireworks and patriotic displays, but also the all-American sport, baseball, delighted the crowd at the Palm Springs Stadium. The Palm Springs Power baseball team took to the diamond, defeating the visiting California Mariners.i
It was an inhospitable start for the Palm Springs Power on the Fourth of July with the first two batters walked. Catcher Sharif Othamn thought the same and made a little visit to Aaron Brooks, who was on the mound. After their talk, it was an easy double play and one more made three. From that moment on, the Power owned the game.
Hits and runs where abound, nine hits, eight runs and five base on balls. The Mariners could never find or get into any kind of grove.
Not only was the crowd entertained by a great baseball game, all the extra activities gave the young people something to do as well. A bounce house for the youngest of viewers, a pie-eating contest, push-car races around the bases, spin around the bat race and even a chipping contest delighted the kids.
After the game, the gates where opened and the pubic and given access to the field in order to see the fireworks that proceeded the game. Everyone sat and waited for the moment the lights went out and blackness fell upon us. A few minutes later, magic lit up the night and for the next 20 minutes fireworks were in the air.
There are not too many things that say "America" in this day and age, but one night a year, we are reminded of the greatness that makes us all proud to be Americans.
Thanks to the staff, players and management of Palm Springs Power Baseball for their cooperation.
