Indio, Calif. rocked the Fourth of July, 2009, at the famous Riverside County Fairgrounds. Live music, food vendors and entertainment kept the crowd on their toes as they waited for the spectacular firework display to begin at nightfall. Brad Mercer and The Acquitted.jpgA number of local bands and musicians performed for the crowd, as a large, triumphant American flag waved in the wind while the warm sun set over the valley floor. A rap artist kicked off the performances and eventually led to local rock bands to take the stage. The Acquitted, a local rock band fronted by The Eagle 106.9’s Brad Mercer, was a highlight performance of the night. The Myx took the stage afterwards and happily spoke to the crowd about the excitement of the night. Both bands covered classic rock hits as well as threw in their own beats from time to time. In order for the bands to handle the hot weather, several large mister fans in front of the stage were constantly running throughout their performances.

Indio-Fourth-044.jpgWhile live music was available for the mature crowd, children had a selection of activities to keep them amused at the event. Several kinds of bounce houses and slip-and-slides were swamped by children waiting for their turn to go wild. Not too far from the bounce houses, children sat patiently as they had colorful unique designs painted on their faces, eventually running off with glee to show their family their new look. Spin art was also available for children, delighting them as they watched interesting designs form after they dropped paint on spinning plates. A balloon maker dressed in an eye catching Fourth of July outfit smiled for pictures as she made various balloon animals for a long line of children.

Indio-Fourth-079.jpgOf course, food was an important theme to Indio’s Fourth of July event. Local businesses sold a selection Mexican food and American hamburgers. Slushies, snow cones and ice creams were sold left and right as the temperature blazed through the evening. Obviously the beverages were the most popular food item being sold during the event, not to mention the bar that sold a selection of beers to event attendees. Despite food being sold, most of the crowd brought their own fare to keep them satisfied as they waited for the fireworks display.

The crowd at Indio’s Fourth of July event grew larger as darkness crept across the valley. A steady decrease in the temperature allowed everyone to become more relaxed and enjoy their time with family and friends. Soon, fireworks began blasting off into the air as the sky became completely dark. The crowd was impressed by the various types of fireworks and watched intently as different colored lights lit up the night sky.

Indio-Fourth-134.jpgIndio’s Fourth of July event for 2009 was a great success, not only in putting on a community activity, but also for bring family and friends together to celebrate America’s most famous holiday. The temperature wasn’t difficult to bear with, and the entertainment kept everyone excited throughout the evening.
