The Indian Wells Chamber of Commerce hosted its first-ever Fourth of July celebration at the Indian Wells Golf Resort. Parking was free with shuttle service to and from the Tennis Garden. Admission was also free and included live music. They had it all — a midway that offered food and drink, a beer garden with reasonably priced beers and wines ($5 and $7) and great food at a great price ($10 gave choice of entrée with pasta and chips on the side, drink included) in the newly remodeled IW Club. The stage was set up and the audience placement was well organized. Ropes and lights were neatly and securely arranged along the ground, zoning the multileveled grassy knoll that had an amphitheater effect. Two local bands provided on-stage entertainment.

The first band was 111, a middle school-age three-piece group where the guitarist handled vocals and the bassist worked the keyboard in what seemed to be a Geddy Lee-inspired position. The drummer was the smallest of the three and beat an amazingly accurate rhythm. They pounded out several cover songs showcasing a variety of talent. This will be a band to watch grow in the upcoming years.

The headliner was Fractured Ego, a group that has been showcased for several shows at the Rock Yard. With a mixture of covers and originals, they pleased the crowd and got them up and dancing. Their songs ranged from Weezer to Loverboy to Led Zepplin. Fractured Ego, a five-piece band, gave their audience an upbeat variety and fun atmosphere. Every song was done true to its form. The guitarist amazed the crowd with his perfect play of intricate pieces.

The show culminated with the two bands taking the stage together. Both 111 and Fractured Ego performed Neil Young’s “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World” in an inspiring jam.

The fireworks display started promptly at 9 p.m. Set to an array of patriotic songs. including the “Marine Corps Hymn” (a personal favorite), “Anchors Away” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” As the explosions lit up the night sky, far off down the wash, the fireworks from Indio’s celebration could be seen almost accenting the display.

Overall the event was a great first annual with providing free parking and shuttle service to the class at which everything from beer to tri tip was being offered at a very agreeable price. The Indian Wells Chamber of Commerce has set themselves up for a large turn out next year!

Special thanks to the Indian Wells Chamber of Commerce, the Indian Wells Golf Resort, the IW Club, 111 and Fractured Ego for providing such a great night of patriotic celebration. Also thanks to David Cole for handling photography duties.
