Private-Lives-Cast.jpgLa Quinta PlayHouse Presents Noel Coward’s ‘Private Lives’

Through May 31
La Quinta PlayHouse
La Quinta, California

Story and photos by Greg Begin

La Quinta PlayHouse is presenting an outstanding adaptation of Noel Coward’s play “Private Lives” in La Quinta’s quaint, historic district. Director and cast member Eric Olson and cast bring the 1930 comedy to life in the intimate theater in an entertaining way any married couple can truly appreciate. The three-act play tells the tale of two newlywed couples who happen upon their respective ex-spouses while both couples honeymoon at the same hotel in Deauville, France. Pictured are (standing, l. to r.): Victor Prynne (Eric Olson), Louise (Jane Parson), Amanda Prynne (Jenise Fryatt); (seated):  Elyot Chase (Brian Raffi), Sybil Chase (Tawni Fiamengo).

In Act I, Elyot Chase, played by Brian Raffi, and his new wife, Sybil, played by Tawni Fiamengo, are relaxing on their balcony, as her questions begin about his first marriage. Brian Raffi does a wonderful job displaying the obvious exasperation this conversation is causing him. Meanwhile, on the next balcony, Victor Prynne, played by Eric Olson, and his new bride Amanda, played by Jenise Fryatt, begin their honeymoon with him bristling about her ex-husband’s abuse toward her. Upon both couples realizing that their respective ex-spouses are practically sharing their new honeymoons together, Elyot and Amanda each suggest to their new spouse that maybe another hotel would be more appropriate. Neither new spouse agrees to this, causing a fight that leaves each of them storming off in a huff to be alone. This leaves Elyot and his former wife Amanda to discuss their new and former marriages, leaving them both wondering if their first marriage had really been all that bad after all. In fact, they discover they are still in love to the point that they decide to run off to Paris without their new spouses. All four actors do a splendid job with the witty, quick-paced dialogue entertaining the audience with the awkward predicament in which their characters have created.

In Act II, it doesn’t take Elyot and Amanda very long one evening in their Paris flat to remember what it was that caused them to divorce in the first place. They argue about love, hate and jealousy, as if they were in their first marriage together all over again. Ahh, the good ol’ days ... until Victor and Sybil stop by. French-speaking maid Louise, played by the venerable Jane Parson, has a brief appearance and adds some fun comic relief.

Act III opens the next morning with Elyot and Amanda trying to make up and reingratiate themselves with their new spouses. But, as in love, marriage and private lives, Victor and Sybil get into a heated argument about their new spouses’ virtues. Much to the amusement of Elyot and Amanda, the heated argument they’re witnessing renews their alliance once again. In fact, they figure they’re able to sneak out of the heat of the battle together unnoticed, leaving Victor and Sybil alone to work it out.

La-Quinta-Playhouse.jpgOlson (as Victor Prynne, the play's director and the managing director of the La Quinta PlayHouse) and his troupe pull off a fast-paced, entertaining and quite humorous remake of this Noel Coward classic. Also, be sure to note the tremendous job done with the timely classic costumes by David Proszek.
